Charleston Duck Race: On June 7, 2008, we conducted our 2nd Annual Charity Duck Race. Sponsors, Rotarians and citizens adopted 13,357 ducks, which resulted in over $120,000 (including matching funds from the Daniel Island Community Fund) for Rotary projects and contributions to eight area charities. This event received recognition as the top service initiative from the Rotary district covering Eastern South Carolina. Official Race Website: www.CharlestonDuckRace.com
Literacy: Literacy is a key initiative of Rotary. We have been recognized by Rotary as the top literacy program in the Eastern district of South Carolina. We have purchased books and other materials for local libraries and schools, sponsored local students in a summer entrepreneurial program, YESCarolina. We volunteer at after school programs and we also provide all third grade students in Daniel Island and Cainhoy schools with their own dictionary each year.
Education Scholarships: Annually, we present scholarships to area high school students to be used for their freshman year of college. In the spring of 2008, we awarded four scholarships totaling $8,000.
Community Food Drive: With the support of Publix, we deliver around 50 food bags (each feed approximately 4-6 people for 2-3 meals) to the Cainhoy Community Center five times a year.
Rotary Exchange Student: In the current school year, we are hosting an exchange student from Belgium who is attending Bishop England. We are also seeking local rising juniors for next year that are interested in spending their junior year (009-2010) overseas.
Clean Water: We support clean water programs for needy areas around the world through volunteer work and donations to Water Missions International (visit). We are currently attempting to secure funds (from Rotary grants) to ship several water systems to a needy location in another country.
Polio Eradication : The club has made a donation in support of Rotary International’s effort to eradicate polio worldwide. This effort is benefited by a $355 million donation from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Learn More
