About the event

Jennifer McCormick, the Chief of Collections at the Museum spoke to us via Zoom I May 2023 during the museum’s 250th anniversary. She mentioned that the museum has 2,400,000 items in its collection but only 6,000 items on display. That means there are 2,394,000 artifacts sitting around somewhere gathering dust. Who chooses what gets displayed and what does not? Why are some items not displayed? Too fragile? Too numerous? What rationale does she use to decide? Where to these items come from? How does the museum preserve different types of objects? Paper? Wood? Clothing? Ceramics? Jennifer got her undergraduate degree in Anthropology from the College of Charleston grad and started working at the museum while she was in school. She has been with the museum since 2009.
