December 16, 2020 - Rotary Recap. Perrin Lawson, Deputy Director of Explore Charleston, was the Club’s weekly breakfast speaker held virtually. Charleston has seen a wealth of visitor prosperity in the past several years. Perrin shared that 2/3rds of the hospitality industry was laid off in 1 month. Visitors to the area are concerned about the weather and safety. Charleston’s hospitality sector has been supported this past year by short term rentals, micro weddings and youth sports. Most people are driving to Charleston rather than flying this year. Member Jim Miller shared his story from growing up in Texas and having a long legal career in Louisiana. Jim is retired and moved to the area 10 days prior to the Covid lockdowns began. Jim is another Dr. Bill recruit. Member Dr. Jay Sands also had an opportunity to share his story. He is a semi retired cardiologist and he is currently teaching at MUSC. He enjoys spending time with his wife & children, duck hunting, trout fishing and golfing. Dr. Jay’s first interaction with Rotary was when the Doylestown Pa Rotary provided a scholarship to him when he attended Villanova in the 1950’s.
