3/2/2022- Rotary Recap - Mena Mark Hanna - Spoletto

March 2nd Rotary Recap

Ed Rominger delivered the invocation.

This is Spoletto USA's first entire season since 2019! Our guest speaker was Mena Mark Hanna, the General Director of Spoletto Festival USA. Before his current role with Spoletto, he worked @ Rice University in Houston, and before that, he was in the United Kingdom.

Originally scheduled to go live in 2020, the world premiere of "Omar," an opera written by Rhiannon Giddens and is based on the life of Omar Ibn, an enslaved Muslim-African man brought to Charleston in 1807.

Mena Mark & his family moved to Charleston in the fall of 2021 and are expecting the birth of their 2nd child this spring. Mark's wife works in consulting/tech with clients in Europe & the U.S.

Darren Arndt gave his "about me" speech.

Darren played football @ West Virginia University.

He got into the insurance business just like his dad & grandfather as an insurance underwriter in Cincinnati, Ohio; shortly after, he and his wife moved to Charleston in 2021, where he works for Marsh & McLennan (married in 2020).

Congrats to Kathy Burgess & Nicole Stewart for receiving their white badges

Lou Mello gave us an update on the local Rotary foreign exchange student program. The program will continue this summer and send 13 students from here abroad. (Hopefully, they will receive the same amount) the ideal age is a junior year student returning as a senior. Students are represented from Europe, Japan, Brazil, Czech Republic, Taiwan, etc.

Congrats to Colleen McGregor for becoming the new literacy chair!
