About the event
September 16 -- Dr. Thomas Horan, Professor of English Literature at The Citadel – Dystopian Books in Today’s World. Bill Stevens turned us on to Dr. Horan. They both work as mentors for students at The Citadel. For those of you who may not be familiar with the genre, dystopian literature describes a society characterized by poverty, squalor, or oppression. Basically, the novels explore social and political structures in a dark, nightmare world. Think about books like George Orwell’s Animal Farm, Brave New World, The Hunger Games, Clockwork Orange, Fahrenheit 451, The War of the Worlds, and Lord of the Flies. Could one perhaps characterize our society today as dystopian? Dr. Horan might make us consider that possibility. Dr. Horan got his bachelor’s degree from Harvard, his law degree from Cornell, and his PhD from the University of North Carolina. At The Citadel he specializes in 20th century British literature (especially political dystopian fiction), and modern drama. https://www.citadel.edu/root/english-faculty-staff/55-academics/schools/shss/english/21624-thomas-d-horan https://thecensorshipfiles.wordpress.com/an-interview-with-thomas-d-horan/
