While at the University of Maryland in Baltimore in addition to his clinical duties he directed a lab focused on novel methods of inducing transplant tolerance. In the world of transplant surgery the required logistics are measured in hours and minutes. Dr. Scalea founded MediGO and MissionGO which integrate drones into this complex supply chain. These two companies employ more than 60 people nationwide and are disrupting the digital health and transportation industries. In April 2022 they won the coveted Gold level Edison Award.
