PLEASE NOTE: This meeting will be held at the Daniel Pointe Retirement Community auditorium rather than the DI Club.
Every ship that enters the harbor is guided into its berth by one of the Charleston Pilots. The pilot boat meets the vessel about 15 miles offshore and the pilots steps off his boat onto a rope ladder hanging on the side of the incoming vessel. And of course, most of these moves take place at night and in inclement weather – strong winds, hard rains, thunderstorms, fog, and shoaling. Needless to say, it is a dangerous job. The object is to make sure these vessels make it safely to their berth, and to ensure that there are no environmental mishaps in the process.
