Scarlett Wilson, Solicitor, Ninth Judicial Circuit

September 25 (DI Club) -- Scarlett Wilson, Solicitor, Ninth Judicial Circuit (Charleston and Berkeley counties). Scarlett spoke to our Club in June 2022 about the backlog of cases in Charleston and Berkeley County. At that time there were around 10,0000 cases. In January the 9th Circuit had 1,289 pending charges, 87 murder cases and 51 sex crime cases that are more than 3 YEARS OLD. These people are sitting in a jail cell waiting a couple of years for their trial. They may – or may not – be guilty. That works to the advantage of the defense. Witnesses memories fade. They move and cannot be found. This time she is on a mission to change the way that judges are selected in this state. As it stands, it is, basically, a good old-boys network. Elected lawmakers in Columbia select new judges. The problem is that as lawyer lawmakers there is a good chance that they may eventually try a case before that particular judge. Can a judge in that situation be truly impartial? Scarlett has a different plan.
