About the event
The Daniel Island Community Speaker’s Series will continue on Wednesday evening, April 27. Our speaker will be Jim Elliott, the Executive Director of the Center for Birds of Prey and Founder of the Avian Conservation Center. This evening will be a little different from other speaker’s series presentations. The evening will begin with a flight demonstration on the back lawn of the Daniel Island Club from 6:00 to 6:30. We might see falcons diving, eagles soaring, and owls flying right at us. This will be followed by the usual cocktail hour from 6:30 to 7:00. Jim will begin his presentation promptly at 7:00 p.m. The flight demonstration will obviously be available only to those attending in person at the Club. Jim’s presentation, however, will be a hybrid event -- it will be held both in person in the ballroom at the Club and via a simultaneous Zoom presentation for those who are unable to attend in person or feel uncomfortable doing so.
Jim is a lifelong student of birds. Early in his career he became aware of the need for a professional level of care for injured birds in South Carolina. That led him to establish the Charleston Raptor Center in 1991. As the Center grew he recognized a need to educate all of us about the important role birds play in our ecosystem. Birds are particularly sensitive to environmental changes and so wild bird populations reflect the overall condition of our ecosystem. In addition to its educational role, the Center has a Medical Clinic that treats birds injured by gunshots, hit by cars, or shocked by power lines. It nurses them back to health and releases many of them back into the wild. The Center also has an Oiled Bird Treatment Facility to treat birds and their breeding habitats in the event of an oil spill. Collectively, the Birds of Prey Center, the Medical Center and the Oil Treatment Facility are known as the Avian Conservation Center. This is an opportunity for all of us to learn more about the Center and what it does. This event will be held on Wednesday evening, April 27, at the Daniel Island Club. The flight demonstration will be held on the back lawn from 6:00 at 6:30 pm. There will be a cash bar and passed hors oeuvres between 6:30 and 7:00 pm. The program will begin promptly at 7:00 pm and will conclude around 8:00 pm. For those of you attending in person the doors to the Daniel Island Club will open at 6:30 pm. Because this is a hybrid event there are two links below – one if you plan to attend in person at the Daniel Island Club, and a separate one if you plan to join us via Zoom.
