April 15 -- DI Community Speaker’s Series -- Dr. Joseph Scalea. Medical University of South Carolina Vice Chair of Surgery and Director of Innovation. Dr. Joseph Scalea is a transplant surgeon. What he does is hugely important. Without a new organ his patients are going to die . Over the years he has performed thousands of these operations to the point where they have become relatively routine. At some point he started asking his patients why they wanted to live. The answers he got were all over the place – frequently unexpected, often touching. He did a TED talk here in Charleston last spring about the responses he has gotten which, hopefully, can help us reflect on our own reasons to live.
