About the event
On Wednesday evening January 29, there will be two speakers, Nanci Shipman and Dr. Jay Demarco. Nanci will tell a tragic story about the dangers of opioid addiction. Dr. Demarco will offer hope that non-addictive alternatives for pain control are now available which can eliminate the dangers of addiction associated with oxycodone, fentanyl, and a variety of other opioids.
Nanci’s son, Creighton, played lacrosse for Wando High School. He suffered an ankle injury and experienced excruciating pain. Managing pain was critical for him to heal and he was prescribed opioids to aid in his recovery. Tragically, he become addicted to opioids. Soon he turned to heroin and not long afterwards died from a drug overdose. Just months after Creighton’s death her second son, Hollis, was playing football. A bone-crushing tackle broke Hollis’ leg. He was lying on the field screaming in pain. Nancy’s world was crushed. She was experiencing a replay of what happened to Creighton.
For support she turned to a family friend, Dr. Jay Demarco, an orthopedic surgeon at Roper St. Francis. Dr. Demarco and his team have developed a non-prescription protocol for dealing with pain following surgery. His holistic approach relies heavily on a support group of family, friends, and neighbors, as well as a team of highly trained physical therapists. The protocol also includes a concoction of non-narcotic anesthetics which numbs your surgery site for days after surgery. Using Dr. Demarco’s protocol Hollis fully recovered and was back playing football two months earlier than expected without ever using narcotics.
Deaths caused by opioids continued to rise in South Carolina in 2018, but there is hope for the future. Join in for what will undoubtedly be an enlightening presentation.
Nanci and Jay Demarco will speak on Wednesday evening, January 29. The event is at the Daniel Island Club, in the ballroom. Doors open at 6:30 pm; the program starts at 7:00 pm, and will conclude around 8:00 pm. Business casual attire is appropriate.
