May 12 – Field trip to the S.C. Ports Authority. We have rented a bus that holds 40 people for a tour of the Wando Welch terminal. If you have never been, this is an opportunity that is not to be missed. The port contributed $63 billion to the economy of South Carolina. It creates hundreds of jobs that pay about one-third higher than the average in the state. The port serves 100 foreign ports directly. Crane operators can take a container off a ship put it onto a truck, take a second container off a truck and put it in the ship’s hold all within about a minute. The 2-way truck turn takes less than 60 minutes. Very efficient operation. Well worth seeing.
