About the event
September 29 (Zoom) – Trident Literacy. Literacy is one of the major areas of interest for our club along with housing and hunger. Trident Literacy was founded in 1972 using a shoebox of index cards to keep track of the students and their tutors. Today it is a well-respected, leading agency for adult education with the goal of reversing the cycle of generational poverty and illiteracy through the acquisition of vital life skills. Its programs include basic literacy, a GED-prep course, career readiness, English as a second language, and classes on family literacy and parenting skills. Demand for its services grew during the pandemic because many unemployed workers recognized that they needed to increase their skills for the time when the economy turned around. They are looking for economic upward mobility in their job which is going to come largely from English proficiency. Joann Sherman is the Volunteer Coordinator
