President Vicky Wood told us about the Culinary Institute when she visited us a couple of weeks ago. When Johnson and Wales closed its doors in 2006 the Culinary Institute of Charleston stepped in to fill the void. The program has been growing rapidly since and currently offers three degree programs – Culinary Arts, Baking and Pastry, and Hospitality and Tourism Management -- all of which are two-year associate degrees. The current dean, Nathan Rex, is a graduate of the school with a dual degree in Culinary Arts and Hospitality and Tourism Management. He then spent nine years in hotel operations in Las Vegas before returning to Charleston. The advantage of the program is that all of its instructors come from the industry.
