About the event
July 13 – (Zoom) Captain John Cameron, Executive Director, Charleston Branch Pilots Association. The pilots meet incoming ships about 15 miles offshore, they climb a rope ladder hanging onto the side of the ship and climb aboard while both vessels are moving about 10 mph. Nighttime moves and inclement weather are the norm. This is the single most dangerous aspect of the job and a mistake can have deadly consequences. By guiding these ships to their berths, the pilots help prevent accidents, as well as oil and chemical spills, that could cause irreparable harm to the ecosystem. John is a Coast Guard veteran and was Captain of the USCG Sector Charleston from 2005-2007. He retired from the Coast Guard in 2007. He joined the staff of the Branch Pilots Association in 2009 and became its Executive Director two years later.
